Companies must innovate to stay competitive, but no firm has all the relevant knowledge and capabilities within its boundaries. Since Henry Chesbrough's first book in 2003, open innovation has provided a solution, by showing how firms can intentionally manage inflows and outflows of knowledge to accelerate the creation and commercialization of innovations. In the subsequent decade, firms have embraced open innovation to improve performance, while a growing community of innovation scholars has provided a large body of empirical and theoretical research to explain the practice of open innovation. This book provides a thorough examination of research conducted to date on open innovation, as well as a comprehensive overview of what will be the most promising and relevant research topics during the coming decade. It was created by the same editors as Open Innovation: Researching a New Paradigm (Oxford, 2006), the first book to compile academic research on open innovation. This book first integrates research from the first decade of open innovation, and then examines how open innovation can be studied with new levels of analysis and fields of application. After reviewing the challenges forced by firms in managing and organizing open innovation, the book concludes with a detailed research agenda for the future study of open innovation. New Frontiers in Open Innovation provides new and veteran scholars a comprehensive picture of the study of open innovation. Its findings will guide research in this area for years to come. |
