Résumé : |
Weeds in the Near East Region, as in the rest of the developing and developed world, could be a major constraint to crop production as they compete for water, nutrients, light and oxygen; contaminate and/or lower the quality of harvest; and host plant pests. Weed management programmes in most member countries of this region are, in general, not viewed in the same perspective as other plant protection or production programmes and, hence, crop losses due to weed problems continue to be considerably significant. Due to lack of knowledge on weeds and means of their management, most farmers stillspend the majority of their time on hand weeding, a laborious and ineffective method. This publication, which was based on experience gained in the various Near East countries, furnishes information on major weeds of the region and highlights their importance and means of control. It is hoped that this information will assist member countries in developing sound weed management programmes, thereby contributing to improved crop production. |
