Résumé : |
The objective of this project was to study the impact of various ecological parameters on the development of Great Crested Newt larvae in captivity, with a view to their reintroduction into the wild. Two main parameters were explored: diet and temperature. The high mortality rate observed in larvae from Zagórze led to an analysis of food quality, while temperature was studied for its effect on larval growth. A third parameter, egg origin, was also analyzed, revealing that hatching rates vary depending on the pond of origin. Despite significant results, several challenges were encountered. Temperature control proved difficult, unfiltered water introduced unwanted predators, and some steps should have been anticipated. Suggested improvements include the use of additional equipment for more rigorous monitoring of experimental conditions, such as continuous temperature control, and a workload divided among multiple people with a well-defined schedule. The capture marking-recapture method allowed for the identification of juveniles for future tracking. This project enriched practical, theoretical, and management skills, which were essential for understanding the impact of ecological parameters on newts, as well as for managing captive breeding. It opens up possibilities for further research into optimal breeding conditions for the Great Crested Newt and could be extended to other species or geographical regions. Finally, the results show a direct impact of temperature and diet on larval development. Temperature significantly accelerates larval development but does not affect the time it takes for the Great Crested Newt larvae to reach metamorphosis, while larvae are negatively affected by salty food, which is unsuitable for them. The difficulties encountered during the experiment are also highlighted, offering avenues for improvement in future studies.
