Traits such as seed mass, leaf area, wood density and leaf dry matter content depend on various factors and contribute or are part of a tree’s ecological strategy. In a reforestation trial in the field research station La Gamba in Costa Rica, traits and herbivory had been measured previously and their habitat preference along a successional gradient had been quantified using local and literature data.The aim of this thesis was to relate these available data with new measurements of seed mass and leaf phenolic content. Leaf phenolic content differed significantly in 23 tropical tree species but was not correlated with herbivory rates. To understand traits related to habitat preference, I analysed functional trait data sourced from prior studies together with new data on seed mass obtained from a local seed collection and available data from the TRY trait database, aiming to assess correlations and interrelationships within the dataset. These traits were then examined in relation to habitat preferences, exploring correlations and linear models. Seed mass explained 14.4% of the habitat preference of the tree species, with SLA being the second explanatory variable, but just adding 1% more to the model. Height growth might also be an important predictor of habitat preference, which was tested with a smaller dataset. These findings contribute to the broader understanding of how functional traits influence herbivory and the distribution and ecological dynamics of tree species across successional habitat
