Résumé : |
One summer's day in 1902 Breckenridge Lansing, director of a coal mine in the Midwest, is shot dead. His best friend and under-manager, John Ashley, is tried and unjustly condemned, but rescued by six unknown men on the way to his execution. Thornton Wilder traces the fortune of the Ashley and Lansing families both before and after the tragedy - how they loved and flourished, suffered and survived - resolving his narrative with an unexpected but revealing conclusion. It is a magnificent and beautifully written story that synthesizes Thornton Wilder's gifts as a writer with a sense of history unusual in modern fiction. (4e de couverture) |
