This article attempts to determine the nature and relevance of the French Forest Sector model for long-term economic forecasting that represents a complex bioeconomic system in the form of thousands of equations. In particular, it shows that beyond the figures it produces, such a model is able to highlight the determinants of actual phenomena and determine the latter’s order of magnitude and sensitivity to actual parameters. In the context of an expert assessment, the relevance of using such a model resides in comparisons of output variables (price, supplies and demands for wood products, economic surpluses) for various scenarios.

This article attempts to determine the nature and relevance of the French Forest Sector model for long-term economic forecasting that represents a complex bioeconomic system in the form of thousands of equations. Cet article tente de déterminer la nature et la portée des résultats d’un modèle économique de prospective le French Forest Sector Model représentant un système bioéconomique complexe sous la forme de milliers d’équations. En particulier, il montre qu’au-delà des chiffres qu’il produit, un tel modèle présente la capacité de mettre en avant les déterminants des phénomènes réels, d’en déterminer l’ordre de grandeur et la sensibilité aux paramètres réels. Dans le cadre d’une expertise, l’intérêt de l’utilisation d’un tel modèle se situe au niveau de la comparaison des variables de sortie (prix, offres et demandes de produits bois, surplus économiques) selon différents scénarios.
