Résumé : |
The concept of Anthropocene, advocated by Paul Joseph Crutzen, emphasises mankind’s capacity to create and modify its own environment on a scale that bears no comparison with any other species, on a par with a telluric force. Anthropocene theorists severely criticise and even challenge most values considered to be fundamental for western societies. Without accepting this view as an indiscriminate whole, one can nonetheless strive to have an “alternative” vision, in particular with reference to the foundations of the theories advocated by Edgar Morin on complexity added to those of Ulrich Beck on the risk society, which provide valuable tools for analysing action including for foresters, in line with the challenges presented by the Anthropocene. Relying on the thoughts of Jared Diamond amongst others, the article then examines the conditions that need to be met to enable forestry organisations to “foresee so as to see” changes connected with the Anthropocene, and be able to act sustainably in an uncertain universe. Finally, a number of possible choices in management liable to meet the needs of forestry challenges in the Anthropocene are rapidly reviewed. As long as they expressly accept taking up those challenges as their starting point, it is legitimate for foresters to enter into any debates involving forests and how they evolve and hence to advocate another way of analysing and questioning the foundations of the Anthropocene.
