Added value is an economic concept that enables the wealth produced to be quantified. This article attempts to estimate the added value from silvicultural practices and tree logging. These two areas are treated simultaneously. Based on available Eurostat data, added value with and without subsidies is investigated for the period 1977-2008. The trends observed over these three decades are examined and an attempt is made to establish a relationship between the latter and variations in the volumes of timber marketed and average sales prices. These two variables do not satisfactorily explain the fluctuations in added value. Looking at this from the perspective of the analogous added value in agriculture, it appears that similar fluctuations in added value per hectare or per annual labour [...]
