Added value is an economic concept that enables the wealth produced to be quantified. This article attempts to estimate the added value from silvicultural practices and tree logging. These two areas are treated simultaneously. Based on available Eurostat data, added value with and without subsidies is investigated for the period 1977-2008. The trends observed over these three decades are examined and an attempt is made to establish a relationship between the latter and variations in the volumes of timber marketed and average sales prices. These two variables do not satisfactorily explain the fluctuations in added value. La valeur ajoutée est un concept économique permettant de quantifier la richesse créée. Cet article s’intéresse à estimer la valeur ajoutée de la sylviculture et de l’exploitation forestière. Ces deux branches sont traitées en un bloc. En se basant sur des données Eurostat disponibles, la valeur ajoutée, avec et sans subvention, est examinée sur la période 1977-2008. Les évolutions observées sur ces trois décennies sont étudiées, et une tentative est faite pour les mettre en relation avec les variations des volumes de bois commercialisés et les prix moyens de vente ; ces deux variables n’expliquent qu’imparfaitement les fluctuations de la valeur ajoutée. Une mise en perspective avec la valeur ajoutée homologue de l’agriculture fait ressortir des évolutions similaires des valeurs ajoutées rapportées à l’hectare ou à l’unité de travail annuelle.
