Energy concerns have marked the history of forests and are also likely to influence their future. Energy consumption is on the constant increase. This is expected to slow but not to the extent of decreasing worldwide in the coming decades. Contemporaneously, there will be a decrease in the share of oil, gas and nuclear energy that will be hard to offset with coal and renewables in the interim while other technologies are developed. The energy market will be strained particularly since fossil fuel resources will be subjected to restrictions as part of the campaign agains greenhouse gases. The result will be high prices and sensitivity to business cycle effects.
