An introductory chapter in the first section links marine biodiversity research and conservation in the Caribbean by summarizing the goals and discussions held during the workshop. This section also has separate chapters on the status of knowledge of marine biodivesity in Panama, Costa Rica, Mexico, Bermuda, Cuba, Perto Rico, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Colombie. The last chapter of this section deals with an historical component of Caribbean biodivesity : the prehispanic fisheries of the queen conch. The second section introduces the Census of Marine life program and its projects : OBIS (Ocean Biogeographic Information System), NaGISA (Natural Geography in Shore Areas), HMAP (History of Marine Animal Populations), and Coral Reefs.
