Résumé : |
The filling of the Petit Saut dam in French Guiana (1994-95) flooded 365 km² of primary tropical rainforest. On this occasion, an animal rescue allowed the capture of 967 sloths belonging to two sympatric species: 647 Bradypus tridactylus and 321 Choloepus didactylus. The animals were examined and tagged individually before release in a nearby forest area; 15 B. tridactylus and 14 C. didactylus were also radio-tagged. Average sloth densities before flooding are estimated at 9 B. tridactylus and 4.5 C. didactylus per km², with local variations in densities. Over 80% of the animals are solitary. The populations' demographic structures show interspecific differences in age structure and adult sex ratio, probably linked to significant differences in life history traits and behavior. Reproductive strategies and post-natal development were investigated by direct observations in the wild and through a questionnaire sent to zoos. We reveal different adaptive strategies between the two species, corroborating our interpretations of population structure analyses and allowing to better understand the ecological niches of these species. The post-translocation study, based on radio-tracking and direct observations, allows us to describe the use of space by the animals in their new environment, habitat choice, and survival rates (60-70%). By combining the different parameters studied and by seeking potential correlations between them, we discuss the effectiveness of translocating sloths, in the light of intrinsic and extrinsic factors liable to threaten a species. We then discuss the validity of translocations as a conservation tool for threatened species. |
