A sino-german project investigating the natural vegetation of the Loess Plateau has been the basis for this research. China currently implements a large-scale reforestation program - the Sloping Land Conversion Program- to fight againts erosion and poverty. This also concerns the research area, Yan'An Prefecture in Shaanxi Province. Farmers have to convert their agricultural land on slopes and plant it with trees. The economic situation of farmers in Yan'An Prefecture has been subject to this work. Agriculture is the main source of income for most farmers, followed by off-farm work. Animal husbandry is an important source of income for poor farmers. A principal components analysis was performed to determine the influence of forest on the economic situation of farmers.
