In Cambodia, the rights of the local population on their resources have long time been ignored. Community forestry gained only recognition under pressure of the interantional community at the middle of the 1990's. The FAO implemented project "Participatory Natural Resource Management in the Tonle Sap Region" is one of the pilot projects prooting te transfer of the management to the local communities. The project is active in the Siem Reap province, north of the Tonle Sap Lake. The target area of this work are the evergreen forests in the uplands. The forests are degraded due to illegal logging and slash-and-burn agriculture. The project requested to participate at the development of the management plans and the planning process.
