The objectives of the investigation were to: (I) determine the seasonal variations in sludge stabilization and reductions in the densities of indicator organisms, Salmonella ssp., and enteroviruses that occur with conventional aerobic digestion in cold climates, and (2) demonstrate that both sludge stabilization and reductions in the densities of these microorganisms can be improved by simple modifications that increase process temperature. Two 32 Cum aerobic digesters located at a small municipal wastewater treatment plant were operated continuously over a period of 20 mo to obtain the data necessary to satisfy these objectives. One digester was a conventional digester while the over was designed to minimize heat losses and thus, facilitate autoheating. |
