Comme des indices identiques peuvent correspondre à des combinaisons différentes, il convient de classer les bioclimats en croisant deux variables : I.P.B. et le déficit hydrique relatif, dont la valeur définit des faciès hydriques allant de l'hyperhumide au sec. Un diagramme à coordonnées rectangulaires avec le déficit hydrique relatif en abscisse et I.P.B. en ordonnée permet de localiser, donc de caractériser toutes les stations représentatives. La recherche, conduite par un géographe étudiant les bois et forêts de Basse-Normandie, représente un simple essai. L'outil proposé, s'il se révèle utile, devra être amélioré. In the deciduous forests of France, the availability of water in the period of vegetative activity is a bioclimatically discriminant factor. The Index of Bioclimatic Potential (I.B.P.) aims to represent reality by the use of two indicator parameters : the actual evapotranspiration, and the water deficit, for the period under consideration. The I.B.P. is therefore in the category of indices of aridity/humidity. Identical indices can arise from different combinations, so it is better to classify bioclimates by the interaction of two variables : the I.B.P. and the relative water deficit, whose value defines moisture conditions ranging from « hyperhumid » to « dry ». A graph of relative water deficit against I.B.P. gives the position of all the representative sites, and thus enables us to classify them. This research, carried out by a geographer studying the woods and forests of lower Normandy, is in the nature of a simple trial. If it turns out to be useful, the proposed method will need to be refined.
