Tels qu'ils résultent du rapport préliminaire et des communications présentées à ce congrès, cet article : — expose les méthodes d'inventaire utilisées et les objectifs visés dans les inventaires forestiers nationaux en vue d'arrêter une politique forestière nationale et de la traduire dans des textes et des programmes d'action ; — formule les principes de base qu'il sera souhaitable d'appliquer, à l'avenir, pour la conception et la mise en œuvre des méthodes d'inventaire. L'application de ces principes doit conduire à une amélioration des méthodes et à un élargissement des objectifs. Il est souligné qu'un tel résultat ne pourra être atteint sans un important effort de recherche dont les grandes lignes sont tracées, plus particulièrement, dans la perspective de l'Inventaire forestier français. Il doit être constaté, dans la conclusion, que cet effort de recherche, nécessitant la participation d'assez nombreuses disciplines scientifiques, ne pourra être réalisé que grâce à la collaboration internationale.
A joint symposium of two groups of the International Forestry Research Organization took place from IB to 24 June 1978, in Bucharest, on the subject 'national forest inventories'. This article, based on the preliminary report and on the papers presented at the congress : — discusses the inventory methods in use, and the objectives of national forest inventories, with a view to drawing up a national forest policy and setting it out in documents and in programmes of action; — formulates the basic principles which it would be desirable to apply in future to the concepts and working methods of inventories. The application of these principles should lead to an improvement of the methods and a broadening of the objectives. It is stressed that this outcome cannot be achieved without a considerable research effort. The main lines of such research are laid down, especially from the point of view of the French forest inventory.
